About the Author
Hitomi Shida is a well-known Japanese designer of hundreds of original knitting stitches and knitted garments. She has been teaching, designing and writing books for over 20 years, and her work already enjoys a worldwide following among Japanese knitting fans. Gayle Roehm now devotes herself to fiber arts and happily spends her days with yarn and needles. She has lived in Japan, studied the language for many years, and has knit from Japanese patterns for most of her knitting career. Gayle teaches at knitting gatherings around the country and occasionally publishes her own designs. She's been one of Hitomi Shida's biggest fans for over 15 years.

I could spend the rest of my life knitting patterns from this lovely book. It is a feast for the eyes. The English translation is excellent. Especially helpful are the beginning notes that explain how Japanese charts differ. Take the time to absorb these differences. All patterns are presented in chart form. It takes a bit of time for the eye and mind to decipher the symbols. I spent an evening studying the formation of the symbols and layout in the Guide in the front of the book. That was time well spent. It “clicked†and made sense. Now my mind is full of ideas for scarves, mittens, socks and garments. It would be helpful to draw from previous experience in knitting cables, lace and twisted stitches - so I would not recommend this book for beginners. This book will remain out on the coffee table. It is far too lovely to hide away on the bookshelf.
I got this book yesterday after returning from a knitting tour of Ireland. I was exhausted, but couldn't put the book down. The designs are wonderful from simple to very intricate. My mind is spinning with ideas and I am anxious to swatch them out. The charting is going to take some time to get used to, as some of the symbols are a little different from what I usually knit from. There are no written instructions per row, only the charts. I can't see doing these designs in any other way. The chart symbols are cross referenced to the design pages. The book is divided into chapters, each with its own small project: Lacy Patterns, Overall Patterns and Crossing Stitches, Pattern Panels, Pattern Arrangements, Round Yokes and Edgings. The photography is excellent, each photo showing the design that is charted. This is a must have book for anyone who enjoys designing their own knits, loves texture and is a stitch pattern enthusiast. This is not a book for knitters who don't like charts. Extremely reasonable price for what you receive. Don't pass this one up!
Completely useless as a Kindle book. I'm sure it's very nice in print, but not worth anything on Kindle. The charts don't scale with your screen so you can't read them and it references additional charts by page number which is not integrated with Kindle. It's completely unusable. I was very disappointed.
As a knitter and also as a fan of Japanese culture and Japan in general, I knew I had to have this book. I had been trying for some time to find more on the web about Japanese stitches, and I did find bits and pieces but nothing with a good, solid foundation from which to start. So, even though I have been quite disappointed with the majority of new knitting books I've recently purchased, I was cautiously optimistic that this volume would in fact be just what I was hoping -- and when it arrived, my hopes were met and well exceeded!Enclosed in this softcover, oversized book are quite a few new and unusual stitches, as well as a multitude of stitch patterns that are far more complex than most any Western knitter is accustomed to seeing. Some patterns even include crochet mixed into the knitting! Stitch patterns and even single stitch "groups" can be complex: some, such as the "double decrease right over purl", are complicated enough that instead of explaining the symbol inline, Shida-sensei provides step-by-step, illustrated instructions later in the volume. After explaining the symbols, the remainder of the book is dedicated to stitch patterns, primarily large repeats (50 sts x 48 rows, for example) of interspersed lace and cables which look absolutely stunning. No enthusiastic knitter can possibly browse through them without wanting to immediately try them all.I would recommend this book only for knitters with more than a little experience knitting both cables and lace, and only those very comfortable working from charts. In general, Japanese knitting patterns do not include written instructions, only charts. This volume is no exception. Many, perhaps most, of the stitch symbols included on the charts here do not have equivalent US/Western chart symbols because the stitches simply do not exist in traditional Western knitting. Some of them are easy to conceive of, like adding increases and decreases to a cable stitch to create a lacy cable. Such stitches are not entirely foreign to you if you've read Barbara Walker's Charted Knitting Designs: A Third Treasury of Knitting Patterns or something similar. Others, however, such as Shida-sensei's lift-over and wrapped knot stitches may be entirely new to most knitters confronted with them for the first time.Shida-sensei also provides a selection of "basic" and "arrangement" stitch patterns which show options for modifying the patterns in various ways to create something entirely original to your project. Finally, a sampling of round yokes and a small selection of patterns for complete projects are included at the end (remember: charts and basic steps only, no row-by-row instructions), but the majority of the book is dedicated to stitch patterns without doubt.In summary, experienced and advanced intermediate knitters will find plenty -- tons! -- of new stitch patterns in Shida-sensei's most excellent collection of Japanese stitch patterns. There are enough patterns here to keep you knitting for at least a year or two without knitting the same pattern twice. But I would again caution any knitter who doesn't feel confident in lace and cable knitting to instead gain more experience in those first, and then come back to this treasure afterward. One final caution: Because many of these stitch patterns include such large repeats, they will likely look best in sport weight or lighter yarn. If you are a knitter who prefers to work in DK and heavier yarn, you will probably be dissatisfied with these patterns. It would not be possible to make most types of projects using these patterns with heavier yarn and still get the sizing right. A scarf with a 50-st repeat in even DK weight yarn would be rather wide, don't you think? :)

As the owner of dozens of knitting books, I'm not easily impressed with another new knitting book but "Japanese Knitting Stitch Bible" is an absolute treasure. I promise you've never seem anything like these exquisite patterns before in the US! The pattern on the front alone is worth the very modest price of the book (I paid less than $12.00). The patterns are all in chart form and there is a clear and concise guide to the charts and symbols. The book arrived yesterday and I'm longing to abandon all my Christmas projects in process to start exploring a new pattern with needles and wool. Treat yourself! You won't regret it, I promise. Just think - 260 never-before-seen stitch patterns to inspire and thrill you!

Excellent introduction to pragmatism. Well written and very clear. I recommend it over Cheryl Misak's "The American Pragmatists."
This was not an easy read, but the best introduction to pragmatism that I can imagine. Current and complete. Gives many different angles and critiques. I bough the book to understand Habermas better and learned so much more.

Michael Bacon's book, "Pragmatism: an Introduction" (2012) offers a detailed and learned overview of the philosophical movement of pragmatism which Bacon describes as "North America's most significant contribution to Western philosophy". Although primarily associated with North America, pragmatism has an international scope. At least two major figures Bacon discusses, Jurgen Habermas and Huw Price, are not Americans; and Bacon himself is Senior Lecturer in Political Theory, Department of Politics and International Relations, Royal Holloway, University of London.Bacon has written a brief but dense book, as he covers in 200 pages pragmatic thinkers beginning with Charles Peirce and William James at the close of the 19th Century and concludes with the Australian philosopher, Huw Price and his book written in 2011, "Naturalism without Mirrors" which is new to me. With its largely chronological discussion of philosophers, the book shows well the development and interrelationship of pragmatic themes over the 20th Century and beyond. As the discussion progresses and issues are refined, the book becomes progressively more difficult and more technical.Bacon's Preface and Introduction to the book offer a lucid overview of pragmatism and its themes. He begins with Charles Peirce's initial formulation of the pragmatic maxim in which he proposed that philosophers examine thought and ideas in terms of the difference they make to human behavior. Peirce wrote: "we come down to what is tangible and practical as the root of every real distinction of thought, no matter how subtile it may be; and there is no distinction of meaning so fine as to consist in anything but a possible difference of practice." Bacon shows that pragmatism constituted a pervasive critique of the Cartesianism which set the themes for modern philosophy. Cartesianism resulted in the sharp vacillations between dogmatism and skepticism that characterize much philosophy. Pragmatist thinkers rejected many of the components of Cartesianism, including its quest for certainty, its foundationalism, its representationalism (holding that there was a dualism between thought and matter and that thought somehow had to mirror reality), its correspondence theory of truth, and more. In its place, pragmatism substituted a human perspectivism, a recognition of the fallible character of human thought, an instrumentalism and a sense of human activity and agency as critical to philosophical understanding. The critique and the pragmatic reorientation of philosophical questions had to be expanded and fleshed out in different ways by different pragmatists, as pragmatism itself straddled uneasily the line between objectivity and relativism.Bacon tries to show the continuity between the classical American pragmatists, Peirce, James, and Dewey, and the analytic tradition of philosophy which, according to some writers, displaced pragmatism around mid-20th Century. Thus, Bacon follows the first two chapters of his book, which deal with the three classic pragmatists, with a chapter showing the close connection between pragmatism and analysis in three key figures, W.V.O. Quine, Wilfrid Sellars, and Donald Davidson.Subsequent chapters of the book present philosophers in pairs, with Bacon comparing and contrasting their views. He considers the two leading pragmatic philosophers at the turn of the century, Richard Rorty and Hilary Putnam and their contrasting views about objectivity and relativism. The following chapter examines the German philosopher Habermas and his heavily Kantian approach to pragmatism, comparing it with Richard Bernstein, who takes an approach that draws from many philosophical traditions. A chapter on Susan Haack and Cheryl Misak shows the continued interest in Peirce's pragmatism. The final difficult chapter on rationalism and naturalistic influences on pragmatism contrasts two contemporary thinkers, Robert Brandom and Huw Price.Bacon's approach focuses on different pragmatic understandings of the nature of truth. He also pays a great deal of attention to pragmatism and political philosophy, particularly is it involves the nature of democracy. Bacon recognizes the differences among pragmatists, but his approach tends of minimize the disagreements in favor of emphasizing the common threads of the pragmatic movement. For example, Bacon tries to show how Peirce and James tried to harmonize what many still see as the basic divide in pragmatism on the nature of truth and on determining what counts as the consequence of a belief. Richard Rorty, criticized by many for his alleged relativism is, in Bacon's account, brought close to the views of many of his critics. Of the thinkers Bacon discusses, two have recently written their own broad overviews of pragmatism. Richard Bernstein's "The Pragmatic Turn" explores themes as well as individual philosophers and emphasizes pragmatism's roots in Kant and Hegel. The Pragmatic Turn Cheryl Misak's "The American Pragmatists" The American Pragmatists (Oxford History of Philosophy) examines many of the thinkers that Bacon discusses, but she is more intent on pointing out differences. Misak has learned a great deal from Peirce, and she is critical of the pragmatism of James, Dewey, and Rorty.
