So good that I’m going to ask all students on the next Coach the Life Coach course to read it because coaches need to be able to tell great stories if they are to separate themselves from the competition.What Gallo does brilliantly is collate some of the most memorable storytelling throughout history and dump them all in one place.You may have heard about how Steve Jobs crushed his presentation for the first iPhone by telling the audience he had three new launches to talk about, when he only had one.Equally, you may well know how an interview with Bill Gates went viral just because the Microsoft founder drank a glass of water.And you could have heard about how Starbuck’s CEO, Howard Shultz, exploded a company based on the back of a very short story that wasn’t even about coffee, but an experience.However, I doubt you will know that one of the greatest orators of the twentieth century, Winston Churchill, spent hours simplifying his speeches and removing as many words with too many syllables as possible.Or that Churchill’s first attempt at public speaking was an unmitigated disaster.Or even that probably one of the most well known televangelists in the world, Joel Osteen used to be a nervous bumbling wreck before and during sermons.And you may not know why the last two sets of examples I gave were both in sets of three.But all of that is revealed in ‘The Storyteller’s Secret’.Gallo’s book is a treasure chest of ideas for blog posts, giving presentations, telling stories to help clients and even writing copy for a website.He demonstrates time and time again the unequivocal power of storytelling with, not surprisingly, dozens of compelling stories of his own.
Carmine Gallo attempts to explain how good stories are created and inspire through the examples in this text. He makes it clear that most great storytellers are made as a result of struggle or tragedy in their lives that they turned into victory.The author breaks down the types of stories as follows:- Storytellers who ignore our inner fire- Storytellers who educate- Storytellers who simplify- Storytellers who motivate- Storytellers who launch movementsThere's no doubt parts of this book are inspiring and that this author has proven his point through the stories of some notable people like Howard Schultz (CEO of Starbucks), Joel Osteen (American preacher), Richard Branson (founder of Virgin Group), Amy Purdy (world-class Paralympic snowboarder), Oprah Winfrey (talk show host), Winston Churchill (former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom), etc., etc.For instance, Steve Jobs (co-founder of Apple) used a violation of expectations when he announced in a presentation "We have three products...The first one is a widescreen iPod with touch controls. The second is a revolutionary mobile phone. And the third is a breakthrough Internet communications device." He repeated these three products again and then he violated everyone expectations by saying that they were not three devices. He said, "This is one device. And we are calling it an iPhone."Although this book is spot on with how certain people inspire, motivate, and exert a powerful influence through a great story, I did not find reading this a page turner because it was repetitive, long-winded, and the "secrets" were pigeon-holed into five different types of stories almost all of which could have fit any type of story. To me every story in the book educated, motivated, and simplified the message into something the audience could understand. The author, in my opinion, failed to heed his own advice of simplifying the story and instead crafted a message at least 50% longer than it should have been.So........ here is my story:I am an avid consumer who has become weary over the inferior consumer products that I wasted my money on and which have ended up in landfills. Therefore, as a hobby I decided to combine my love of writing with my desire to review products in order to empower others in making informed purchase decisions and spend dollars wisely in the hopes that they not lose money like I have.Please note that I received a pre-release book. In its current state, I feel this book is one that should be borrowed from a library. If the story were tightened up by about 50% (which I doubt it will be), then I might consider this worth the purchase.
This is one of the few books that a) I couldn't put down, b) I finished cover to cover, and c) recommended it, purchased it for or loaned it to others. Each chapter makes a different point and that's accomplished in 4-5 pages so it's very easy to pick up and put down. The content is absorbing, enlightening and hopeful. The point is made that people respond far better to compelling stories (especially about people overcoming obstacles) than "data dumps" as in Power Point presentations. Less is more and the story is everything. That's not to say that people don't need to know the numbers but they're moved to action by stories more than numbers. If you're a speaker or planning to make presentations I highly recommend it; I plan to make presentations in the future and this book made an indelible impression on me.
This was an ok book. Not great. It took a long way around to give just a little advice. I was hoping for more substance.
This is a powerful book that every working professional should read. It is compelling, evidence-based, filled with stories that not only educate but demonstrate the communication power of storytelling. I first bought and listened to the audio book (the author has a fantastic voice as well as writing style!) There was so much rich content that I wanted to capture, that I bought the paperback book as well. Taking that on a long plane ride with me. A resource that I will refer to and share with MANY times!

This Bruniati book is the first in a two part series about famous costume jewelry makers, in this book you will find those in the A Thru M category which includes Boucher, Carnegie and Coro, with many photos of classic examples of their designs. It is a large book and a bit confusing as it jumps around and has many references (teasers?) to the second N thru Z book, and parts are out of sequence, but the historical information on the jewelry is very interesting and hard to find online, so it is well referenced. Many lovely color photos of vintage jewelry, and the authors even mention little known companies like Anthony Creations with back history - I give this book 5 stars, I also have their second book N thru Z, but you will find that book is around 75% about Trifari, and therefore I would only give that one 4 stars. Good book for your costume jewelry library
I agree with a review I read earlier here that said this is more of a coffee table book than a reference. It has nice photos, and if you read the text, there is some good and knowledgeable information. If you collect or resell costume jewelry, it will help you to recognize specific pieces that are pictured, and give them the label of "book piece." But what I really wanted, and have yet to find, is a book on costume jewelry that will be truly helpful in identifying unsigned pieces and in assigning an approximate date to pieces, and also in learning something about the less famous companies. I wanted help with "mystery" pieces. This isn't that book.
This 2nd volume of the two book set by Brunalti could almost be called a Tribute to Trifari. Granted that Trifari was second only to Coro in production and is highly collected, but Mr. Brunalti dedicated 100 pages to them while ignoring companies like Napier. But this book is a must for anyone collecting or dealing in vintage costume jewelry. It has become the 'Resource' quoted to show authenticity. Mr. Brunalti did thorough research, showing patents along with the finished pieces, leaving no doubt as to which company produced each piece. One section at the end of the book covers all Jelly Bellies, or any Metal + Lucite jewelry that might possibly fall into that category. A smaller section shows posters from WWII and the jewelry inspired by our National pride. While I'm a little disappointed at the limited number of companies covered, the depth of material is excellent. Overall, I consider it money well-spent.
These books are more like coffee table books in my opinion- for instance neither the first volume nor the second volume cover Hattie Carnegie- except in passing. They literally, gave her less than a paragraph! Other companies, major names are covered to death, especially, the exceptionally high end pieces.Again, a good reference book, pretty to look at, but unless you are a collector in the higher end items - I wouldn't advise rushing to buy this set.
I recently received both books (A-M and N-Z) in this series and they are truly an outstanding set of books! I also own Brunialti's "Tribute To America" and "American Costume Jewelry 1935-1950" books but this series with newly updated and researched information along with 300 new photos is a collector's dream! Besides glorious photos, it provides patent information, detailed descriptions, along with any advertisement information these pieces were featured in. Anyone familiar with Brunialti's books, know they are not pricing value guides, but informative books designed to showcase the most highly sought-after collectible jewelry desired by a beginning collector to a seasoned experienced collector. Any true collector will appreciate having these books in their reference library.

One of the founding fathers of cosmetic chemistry is Maison G. deNavarre, a pioneer of the cosmetic industry. He was an excellent and inspiring teacher, even to the extent that the International Federation of the Societies of Cosmetic Chemists (IFSCC) has a Maison G. deNavarre Young Scientists Essay Prize. It is not surprising that he wrote a complete overview of cosmetic chemistry, entitled The Chemistry and Manufacture of Cosmetics. This work, originally published in 1941, became a classic. New and expanded versions became available in 1962 and 1975, but because of deNavarre's death in 1983, we had to wait until 2000 when Mitchell L. Schlossman took on the challenge and extended deNavarre s legacy by editing the latest edition. The current version consists of four books; Volume III is two-books.
Volume I deals in 454 pages with Basic Science, and has chapters on indeed all the basics: skin, hair and nail physiology, toxicology, legal definitions of drugs and cosmetics, dermatology, rheology, and even a section on claim substantiation. The only thing missing here is molecular biology, a very recent trend in cosmetics. Chapters are written by experts in their fields from both academia, such as Professors Howard Maibach, MD and Randy R. Wickett, as well as industry experts like Joseph T. Lin and Linda Rhein.
Volume II deals in 862 pages with Formulating. In 31 chapters every cosmetic product form you can think of is being discussed. Again, the authors are renown for their capabilities in their categories. Each chapter is characterized by clear schematic figures that help to clarify the take-home messages and sufficient up-to-date literature references are provided at the end of every chapter to help the interested reader to continue studying the subject.
Volume III deals with Ingredients in 1124 pages, which necessitated this volume to be split over two books. Here chapters are more variable in content; some provide long lists of otherwise difficult to find information on safety and concentrations typically used in the various applications, whereas others are more descriptive. The majority of these chapters is written by the suppliers of the raw materials, but you have to look long and hard to find a trade name. The only thing missing from this volume is a comprehensive list of new active ingredients, but to be honest, that might constitute a whole new volume for a future edition.
In short, this is an excellent set of books that should provide the basis of understanding of almost every cosmetic formulation that you can think of, especially from the chemistry and manufacturing side as the name of the book rightly suggests. Mitchell L. Schlossman was a contributor to Volume IV of The Chemistry and Manufacture of Cosmetics published in 1975 and worked closely with M. G. DeNavarre, its editor. He felt obliged to carry on DeNavarre s work to update these volumes so that they may be an important guide to formulating cosmetic scientists in the 21st century.
Mitchell earned an M.A. from Kean University and has extensive work experience as a Consultant, Group Leader of Skin Care, Manager of Cosmetics & Toiletries and executive positions in top companies. Currently, he owns a consulting firm, Mitchell Schlossman Consulting, LLC. He is a member of professional societies including American Chemical Society, The Chemists Club, American Institute of Chemists (Fellow), AAAS, CIBS, CTFA (member and Air Quality Task Force), Society of Cosmetic Chemists (Fellow, Past Chairman and National Director, Recipient of Merit Award). He has authored and edited numerous publications in trade magazines, books and professional journals.
