My daughter has learned so much from this book in a very short amount of time. Her sketches have really become more detailed and realistic. It was exactly what I had been searching for to help her with light, shadows and shading. She is 13 years old. It's easy for her to understand and follow. My older daughter is 15 years old and she has also used the book to learn a few things. It's not specifically targeted for children or any specific age group. I think it would be helpful and useful for all ages. I highly recommend this book!
this book is a masterpiece and a gem. the keys for learning drawing is all here. I read many art books but this book is the only one that make me finally get it! I was struggling with perspective and the author with few simple lines just explains it all! juts like that! and I was like O_Ojust get it specially if you are a serious beginner or struggling and you won't regret it. just follow what he says and just do it.
I have many drawing texts and this one quickly became one of my favorites.Drawing is so intuitive and other than having a live teacher, classes or a Udemy course this is the best in line.It is practical in orientation and not 'artsy, farsty' like too many other publications.
We bought this book for our 14 year old grandson's bithday who has taken an interest in drawing. It was a supplement to How to See, How to Draw by Claudia Nice that we previewed in Hobby Lobby. Read a lot of the reviews on both books. How to Draw What You See, seems to be a classic - maybe slightly outdated but still solid techniques. Many teacher reviews & comments of "good for beginners."Unfortunately we didn't see the Dec 26, 2013 4-star review by Debbie where she said, ". . . there are SEVERAL NUDES (page 97) in the section on figure drawing so might not be appropriate for all ages" . . . . My son happened to find it before giving it to him and managed to provide a "cover up" sweater.
So I thought this book would be some of the basic drawing styles, but wow did it open my eyes to all kinds of new things. Shading and proper ways to hold a pencil and such. I always thought that drawing was easy, but I never knew it was this interesting and technically challenging. Love the book. Buy it.
A great "Go To" book, for those that need a bit of a refresher on drawing skills, or strengthen them. I found this a keeper, somethings were often intimidating to draw, this book gets you past, it.

This is "old school" information, which I appreciate. In fact, there is a drawing of a doll called "Poor Pitiful Pearl" who was popular about 60 years ago. This is a good general book for beginners/intermediate. There are lessons in perspective, landscapes, figures and more. The only part of the book I thought was lacking was figure drawing. Overall, the information is helpful.

Outstanding read. I was expecting a typical tell-all ghostwritten-style autobiography and instead discovered that Louise Brooks' writing is witty, intelligent and blunt in all the right places. Her prose is exceptional, her memory sharp and her descriptions almost photographic. Her brash honesty is thankfully matched by her acute analysis of the motion picture industry, Hollywood and the studio system and the people who comprised it. Fascinating work.
For someone who agreed with all the people in Hollywood who wrote her off as being "beautiful but dumb," Louise Brooks sure can write. This is a great collection of essays mainly reflecting on Louise's time in Hollywood and her observations of the ins-and-outs of the business. Fans who are looking for detailed dirt on the actress's personal life will be disappointed, as there's not a whole lot of that here...at least, not by today's celebrity gossip-obsessed standards. But this is still a great read from a former A-list actress's perspective on the early days of Hollywood. Brooks writes very honestly, and much of what she will have to say will likely surprise you. "Lulu in Hollywood" is a pretty quick read, and you'll learn a lot about the early days of motion picture history as a result of reading this.
Louis Brooks was the rare actor who could actually think, write, tell the truth, be courageous enough to resist the phoniness of filmdom.. She was so far above others in talent and ahead of her time that it makes you wonder what possible value celebrity marketing has.
After reading The Chaperone, I became fascinated with Louise Brooks. I read a biography about her, but still wasn't satisfied. This book is her own writing. It is NOT an autobiography. It is about Hollywood with chapters on various stars from her era. But through her writing, which was surprisingly good, it is easy to get a better concept of this unique woman who lived long before her time.
Louise Brooks led one of the most fascinating, self-destructive lives of any actor of the silent film era. A born dancer, and giving professional appearances in Kansas at a very young age, she joined a famous ballet group and became a top dancer before she was kicked out for a "bad attitude". Then on to Broadway rising in the ranks to be a starlette of the great revues of that time, including Ziegfield. Talked into taking a screen test in New York, she immediately was cast and, once again, shot upward like a rocket. NY movie making was quite different than the Hollywood "machine" and once forced to CA, she again rebelled at the reins thrown around her. Off to Germany to make the two greatest silents ever: Diary of a Lost Girl and Pandora's Box with director GW Pabst. Bored with Germany, she fled back to the USA, only to find herself blacklisted. She made a few non descript movies after that and only one with sound. The studios, she claimed, let out a story that her voice wasn't "good" for talkies. What a lie! Her voice is angelic as is shown by her only speaking movie made with none other than a fledgling John Wayne, fresh out of USC.After virtually vanishing for years, she was found in a terrible NYC apartment and convinced to move to Rochester, NY, home of the George Eastman House which was the inception of the largest film library in the world. Through devoted fans and despite her aggressive and often callous behavious, she began writing about her career and Hollywood, German film making and actors she knew. The result is a stunning tour-de-force and not to be missed by a "Lulu" fan. She led a wild, sexually charged life and was an alcoholic in her teens, yet she read philosophy, history, and classic literature. She was so intellectual that men were frightened of her. The rich wanted arm-candy. She was all of that, but because she had brains.Be aware, however, that highly researched biographies of Louise prove that many of her assertions of "fact" and incorrect. Either she didn't remember well or purposely chose to bend the truth a little. Still, a beautifully, lovingly written set of words. The photos alone are worth the price of the book. With her hugely copied "helmet" hairstyle and those dark, penetrating eyes and perfectly symetrical face, her beauty was unrivaled. Personally I think, in her teens to early thirties, she was the most beautiful woman I have ever seen.

I remember peer pressure. Social media takes peer pressure and makes it the thing that gives kids their value. Saying NO doesn't feel empowering to a lot of kids anymore. Feminism has become all twisted into girls feeling forced to be sexy when they should still be children. Remember as a tween how you might notice a boy or read a bookmarked passsage in someone's mom's romance novel but then you might be playing with a Strawberry Shortcake doll or battling with a pretend lightsaber the next minute? Sexuality came about gradually and naturally. Not for these kids. They have access to porn at age eleven or twelve. Much of porn online is violent or fetishist which isn't what you want your child to think is typical sex. I'm not saying porn is bad. I'm saying it has no place in the life of a kid. Especially when they see this stuff daily and unfiltered. They become desensitized. They focus on how they LOOK and how many likes they get. It's a real mess. Girls in middke school photoshop their pics to look thinner & prettier. Intelligence does not get likes. The kids idolize the Katdashians and the number one life goal is "Be famous." Remember how it used to be that was a goal for the few kids who wanted to be an actor/actress and fame just was going to mean they were good at the job they loved? These kids are unhappy. They talk about how hard it all is. I began reading this book because of worrisome things I've noticed going on in instagram accts etc of teenagers I care about. This book explained what I was seeing, why, and that it's not an isolated group of kids. They are mostly all affected. Worse, the age that this is happening is younger each year. Everyone needs to read this book. Whether you have kids or not. Boy or girl. Male or female. It's not just the girls who are affected. The boys are just as affected. If you think this doesn't concern you, it will when these kids grow up and run the country. We need to have a dialogue in this country about what we value and what our hopes are for this youngest generation. I love technology. I got an iphone one the day it went on sale back in 2007. Loving technology does not mean we don't need to use our brains and think. Kids are not adults. Period. It doesn't matter that they are growing up. They are not GROWN. They need to be protected. People need to be parents and not best friends. Please. Please. Read this book. Easily the most important book you'll read this year. As a nation, we need to talk about this. Kudos to Nancy Jo Sales for such excellent research & exhaustive interviews. We need this book to educate us & start us talking.
I am a Teaching Pastor at a large evangelical church in Texas. I read this book after hearing Nancy speak at a Technology and Faith conference, and it inspired crucial conversations and sermons in our church. I can't recommend it highly enough for parents of both girl and boy tweens and teens. We've buried our heads in the sand long enough. We need to understand the dangers our children face in the online world BEFORE we hand them internet connected devices so we can help them navigate this brave new world in a safe and healthy way. Nancy's book provides the data and stories we need to make informed parental decisions. Her book is brutally and explicitly honest, and therefore not appropriate for younger children (the language and stories are rough). But that brutal honesty is exactly what parents need to face. May this book inspire life-giving conversations in your own home, ministry, or church.
The book is full of scenarios of what a lot of teenagers are into. I was looking forward to the conclusion after a while since the scenarios never seemed to stop. I wish the author also delved on what adults can do to help these kids or what adults can do to become more a part of the kids' life.

Initially this book stunned me with its bold crass language that was so unfiltered and raw. The reality that these words came from young teens was just heartbreaking. I decided to do the audio version of this book and found it very powerful to hear the words of these girls who were a part of the study in this book. The voices in the audio version screamed for our attention as readers to hear the heart of girls who are desperately seeking our help to save them from what they know they need rescuing from.I had decided to look at it from a position defending the opposite side to which this books position takes as a way to see the whole picture. I tend to want to root for the underdog in any competition and this book takes such a bold stance that I found myself wanting to fight for the other side at times when it was rooting against social media. In the end though there is no doubt that this book makes a bold statement about girls and women in society.Girls need advocacy and respect of their feminine role so they can have their childhood be protected and grow into healthy women of purpose with a sense of confidence of who they are. Their childhood is being ripped away and there needs to a way to find protection for these girls. I think this book doesn’t really spell out the answer but is an excellent voice to say “Hey, we have a problem here! Do something!â€. I do think however that this book could have made the statements it does without the raw language as a personal preference. I would rather know and listen to the heart of the girls messages rather than the language. I also think the scope of this research could have been more balanced in taking a look at teens of all backgrounds and look at the positive aspects of social media for some girls.

Cixi appears in this story as a low-grade concubine who has been chosen by the Emperor to satisfy his pleasures, be they sexual or artistic. A woman who has no say in political discourse, Cixi demonstrates an unusual intelligence and eventually influence in those family and ministerial members of the imperial family. Thus, it is no surprise that Cixi sees China going downhill when Western powers begin to flex their military muscles in threats if they are not given more trade rights in previously forbidden Chinese cities. While these "foreign devils" are posing war, Cixi is wise enough to discover China's shrinking economy and knows that growth for China lies in modernizing in order to improve her financial status.Westerners perhaps, in this present time of revolutions and coups, fail to appreciate how dramatic it was for Cixi to have a son by Emperor Xianfang and take over as co-Regent with the Emperor's wife, Empress Zhen, after the Emperor's death. Xianfang had made numerous decrees leading to the Opium War that infuriated foreign traders. Most unusual was the bond between Empress Zhen and Cixi, who shared precise opinions about foreign and domestic matters; the Empress, on the other hand, was more than willing to take a backseat and let Cixi rule the country. Her rule continues with carefully calculated plans that wind their way around the opposition ministers of the Court. Eventually foreigners get more trading rights, places to explore in China, and implementation of industrial inventions, such as the telegraph, electricity and the railroad that benefit all countries involved, including China herself. The largest fights over these many years is over the trade of opium, a drug that was destroying China; permission for foreign missionaries to minister in interior China, the burning of the Summer Palace by angry foreigners, the increasing incursion of Japan and other nations, and many other debacles that Cixi manages with aplomb and great diplomatic skill.Cixi toward the end of her life recognizes that her son's rule, like his father's, was a total disaster and fears what will occur when she has gone. She has retired twice but still "managed" or "ruled" China for most of her life; the opposite poles of thinking in the Court almost mandate a Parliamentarian style government for the future in which checks and balances will allow no extremist thinking to destroy the progress. To her credit this was implemented after her death.Every page of this biography, which is also truly a history of China between 1835 and 1912, is fascinating, accurate because of obvious precise research, and exciting. Many ministers are characterized as well, with their strengths and weaknesses exposed for analysis as they make beneficial and deleterious decisions that Cixi must expand or annul. It's a perilous but thrilling journey the reader shares with Cixi and Jung Chang has again written a brilliant story about the violence, weak personal characters, tragedies, joys of China in its drive to become a well-respected, modern nation. Superb in all ways and a great read!
GREAT BOOK, but by itself is totally inadequate. This book is very knowledgeable and thorough, but is in complete disagreement with a number of other great books. Despite the upheavals of 1911,the clash between, Nationalists-&-Communists, takeover by Japan, and the Cultural-Revolution of Chairman Mao, there are many, many authoritative records available, but many of them wildly disagree with each other on many, many major topics.The reasons for this are: very few people actually knew much about the actual live of Cixi, since if you weren't very close to her orbit, all you heard about was 2nd hand at best, and often far more removed than that.Of the people who actually knew about the "REAL" Cixi, I would list just 3: 1) Her chief Eunuchs, there were two, her first one went on a vacation of sorts, which was actually unlawful, although approved by CIXI. Somehow, his behaviour while on vacation led to his being beheaded by a government official in the area he was at, and although it was/would have been against the wishes of Cixi, his beheading was indeed lawful. Almost every person who describes this event, has a wildly different account, even though, in a broad sense, they sort of tell a similar story.2) Her lifelong semi-intimate companion Ronglu, who never left any memoirs, 3) The 'Princess' Der Ling who spent 2 years in her court {1903-1905} as her closest confidant/translator/semi-advisor. Ms Der Ling has been widely criticized and denounced, mostly unfairly by my account, but she wrote lucidly and intelligently about Cixi, and must be considered as a prime source for information about the REAL Cixi.BOTTOM LINE: No single book on Cixi is adequate by itself, at a minimum, if you are interested in her story you MUST read at least 4 books:"Dragon-Lady" by Sterling Seagrave, "Empress Dowager Cixi" by Jung Chang, and 2 of Princess Der Ling's books: "Old Buddha" & "Two Years in the Forbidden City.In addition, I highly recommend the following additional books for reference which are dirt cheap {used here on Amazon}: "Political History of China, 1840-1928, and "China's Last Empire / The Great Qing" by Harvard Press.FOR REAL, great background information on this timeframe you also need to read the extensive writings of Robert Hart, an Englishman who became the second Inspector-General of China's Imperial Maritime Custom Service from 1863 to 1911. {NOTE: I haven't even begun to go down that road yet}
An exceptional book about a very remarkable woman who was effectively the ruler of China for nearly half a century. She made her share of mistakes (all rulers do), but on the whole was probably among the smartest and wisest heads of state that China -- or any other country -- has ever had. And yet, because of the revolutionary upheavals in that country she has been largely lost sight of by historians (of which I am one by profession) and, even worse, tarred by all kinds of false accusations. It is true that she did represent a nondemocratic dynasty, but she also moved in her final decade in power to give her country an elected parliament and a western-style constitution. Jung Chang at times becomes a bit too enthusiastic about her subject, who she clearly admires, but on the whole this is a sound piece of historical writing, based on sources that have only been uncovered recently, and the prose is a pleasure to read. It would not be wrong to describe this account of the Empress Dowager as a real page-turner you will not want to put down.
