Broken windows breed disorder. So said George L. Kelling and James Q. Wilson in a groundbreaking article for the Atlantic Monthly in 1982. Now Kelling returns with Catherine M. Coles to call community policing and the aggressive protection of public spaces the best crime-control options available. Three-strikes-and-you're-out is fine as far as it goes, say the authors, but it focuses on punishment rather than prevention. Kelling and Coles make sensible suggestions for restoring law and order to the places where they no longer seem to exist. Their argument is aided immensely by real-life examples of how their "broken windows" strategy has reduced crime where it's been tried.

This book offers a dry but convincing argument for community policing and other approaches to civic order that pay attention to small incivilities like aggressive panhandling and fare-beating. The book's title derives from an influential 1982 Atlantic Monthly article by criminologist Kelling and James Q. Wilson, which argued that obvious neighborhood decay?like unattended broken windows?furthered criminal behavior. The authors cite several factors?including the rise of individualism, the decriminalization of drunkenness and the deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill?that contribute to public disorder. Many of the homeless, they note, are not merely down on their luck but suffer serious behavioral problems. They explain how civic reforms during the 1950s that professionalized police services shifted police work from crime prevention to crime response, thus creating some of the unintended consequences that more recent reforms have had to address. Beginning most notably with the New York City Transit Police, for whom Kelling consulted, police departments have recently focused on minor offenses, capturing a large number of serious criminals in the process. Other police departments, with the assistance of civic groups, have begun similar work. The authors provide cogent advice, backed by copious endnotes, on how to implement similar strategies. They say too little about the challenges in recruiting and training police for community strategies, however, although they do acknowledge that some New York outreach workers have been accused of abusing street people. Coles is a lawyer and anthropologist.

Th term broken windows, a metaphor for increasing public community disorder, was coined by Wilson and Kelling in a March 1982 Atlantic article. Their antidote to "broken windows"-community policing- is actually a revival of the 19th-century policeman on the beat. Community policing focuses on quality-of-life crimes (vandalism, fare beating, etc.) rather than felonies and attempts to change the operative police model to one of order maintenance and crime prevention. Kelling has been associated over the last 20 years with the Kennedy School, the National Institute of Justice, the New York City Transit Police, and as a consultant in many locales for pratical research and application of this model. Although he has published much, this readable monograph is his most popular and substantial treatment to date. It includes case studies of New York, Baltimore, San Francisco, and Seattle and a frank discussion of the biggest problem with community policing: it relies heavily on police discretion. Everyone should read this book; it would inject realism and hope into public policy discussion.

There is so much more information in this book than I expected. Enough to get you started on all sorts of mediums. Based on other "handbooks" I have, I wasn't expecting such thorough information. It covers many mediums and many subjects. Very comprehensive.
I have little to add to the other reviews except to maybe say that I've tried to collect whatever published material exists on scientific illustration over the past 40 years, and this is the only one to buy. Anything else is now superfluous.

I: A Metaphor
The mountain as metaphor looms large in the lives of marginalized people, people whose bones get crushed in the grind of capitalism, patriarchy, white supremacy. How many of us have struggled up the mountain, measured ourselves against the mountain, failed on the mountain, lived in the shadow of the mountain, hit our heads on glass ceilings, tried to climb the class ladder, lost the fight against assimilation, struggled our way toward that phantom called normality?
We hear from the summit that the world is the best from up there. Hear that we are lazy, stupid, weak, ugly, that we live at the bottom precisely because we are those things. We decide to climb that mountain, or make a pact that our children will climb it. The climbing turns out to be unimaginably difficult. We are afraid; every time we look ahead we can find nothing remotely familiar or comfortable. We lose the trail. Our wheelchairs get stuck. We speak the wrong languages with the wrong accents, wear the wrong clothes, carry our bodies the wrong ways, ask the wrong questions, love the wrong people. And it's goddamn lonely up there on the mountain. We decide to stop climbing and build a new house right where we are. Or we decide to climb back down to the people we love where the food, the clothes, the dirt, the sidewalk, the steaming asphalt under our feet, our crutches all feel right. Or we find the path again, decide to continue climbing only to have the very people who told us how wonderful life is at the summit booby trap the trail. They burn the bridge over the impassable canyon. They redraw our topo maps so that we end up walking in circles. I have the 2002 version of the textbook.The table of contents is very informative. It points out the pages that touch on other courses (earth science, biology, history, astronomy, physics), and has separate pages listing the different types of labs (chem labs, mini labs, problem-solving labs, and discovery labs). I bought their lab manual which has different experiments than the textbook so we wouldn't have to write everything out in a lab journal, but you wouldn't necessarily have to have the lab manual to complete labs. There are at least 78 labs in this book (not including the 26 problem-solving labs which are activities like making graphs and analyzing data). While some labs included in the text require lab supplies you might find in a high school lab, some can be done using materials from your local hardware store.The photos and graphics are in color and the language is very accessible, which makes the text enjoyable to read. Each section has a list of vocabulary in the left column and the words are clearly defined in the text. The chapters end with a study guide where each section is broken down into its' main ideas, followed by assessment questions and a page of standardized test practice. I appreciate that the chapters refer to things learned in earlier sections or chapters and reference which chapter or section the information came from so you can review it if necessary. Answers to practice problems scattered throughout the chapter are in the back of the book, but answers to the end of chapter assessments are in the teacher's edition of the textbook.There's also a teacher's edition of the lab manual which has the answers to the labs, and a teacher's edition science notebook which contains the answers to the student's science notebook.Overall, a very well done series.Item was well packaged and received quickly.
This book has enough width and depth for first-year high-school chemistry. Most of the students I tutor use it for honors chemistry. Even if you are in second-year chemistry (AP or IB), you will still find this book very helpful.I bought this book (listed as used, like new) from Amazon. A brand-new book was shipped from California to Virginia in just 3 days! It is the best purchasing experience in my life.
